A wonderful week in Austria

I was so excited to win the May prize of a trip to Austria. I took my eldest daughter and it was a superb week where everything went perfectly. I'd never been to a chalet hotel, nor skiing, so did not really know what to expect. It was amazing.I have already requested a brochure for next year and would encourage anyone else looking for stunning scenery, peace, fun and walking in the summer! Inghams are highly professional and I could not fault the staff at the chalet. They made us all feel special, the service and food were second to none. The hotel may not have the decor and luxuries of a large hotel but I've stayed in five star hotels and never had such a warm and genuine welcome. They had a lovely policy of sitting four people together at the evening meal, changing the four each night. This may sound daunting but it led to a very friendly atmosphere. There was one couple who did not want to partake in this arrangement and this was easily accepted. To come 'home' to homemade cakes and tea was very nice, as was the free wine that flowed with the wonderful meals! We arrived to pouring rain (they'd apparently had 22 days of it!) and the first day was very cold and grey. We still had a lovely day, visiting Zell am See and taking a boat trip on the 4km lake to see the glaciers in the distance. The following morning we awoke to see the sun streaming through the windows and it stayed like this for the rest of the week, probably early 20's. So lucky. We largely spent our time walking up the hills and mountains, using the cable cars and buses which are free in the summer. It's hard to convey the absolute beauty of the stunning scenery. I'll try and attach a few pic's but they won't do it justice!! To walk in the sunshine where often all we could hear were the melodic chimes of the cow bells, the streams and the breeze were a treat. Pure bliss!! At the end of each day I'd comment on the breathtaking and awe inspiring scenery and then the next day it would be surpassed! I even pushed my comfort zone barrier and walked the 42 metre tree canopy walk! Inghams offered a lot of coach trips but, to be honest, you don't need them as long as you enjoy walking. We did take the trip offered to Salzburg which was very worthwhile. We paid an extra 10 euros to a very engaging Austrian who took us on an hour's walking tour, learning some history and heard stories of Mozart and the Sound of Music. We then had 4 hours to explore this beautiful city, one highlight for me being the Mirabel gardens. Don't let the word 'walking' put you off! The path's are well sign posted and the different degrees of walks clearly marked. Welcoming Alms for refreshment and rest are well spaced. Even some bizarre sunbeds on top of the mountain! Having said that, my daughter did book us into the spa hotel opposite for the last day for a massage, swim and jacuzzi in their outdoor heated pools to cure my aching shins! This part of Austria is well worth going to in the summer. Mountain bikers as well enjoy bombing down our nearest mountains which is entertaining to watch! Thank you Silver Travel Advisor but to everyone else, just go! You'll enjoy it, I'm sure.
