I'm riding up the lift at Deer Valley with a guy who turns out to be from Switzerland, so I ask him, "What's somebody from Switzerland doing skiing in Utah?"

His answer said it all: "Because that's where Deer Valley is."

We started skiing at DV two weeks after it first opened (1982). 18 years ago we retired and moved to DV to ski there all the time.

DV has one major problem— too many people have discovered it is the best ski resort in the world, and today's crowds exact a cost in the quality of the ski experience compared to 10 years ago when crowds were less, but still, one skis in Utah because that's where Deer Valley is, and there is nothing like it anywhere else.

A quick guide to DV skiing which covers 6 mountains: Lady Morgan, Empire, and the runs to the left of the Wasatch Chair on Bald Mtn are the steepest terrain. Northside's easy intermediate runs are the most popular. Sterling & Wasatch chairs serve more difficult intermediate runs. The lower mountains, Carpenter chair & Deer Crest, offer shorter runs of all degrees of difficulty.

A word must be said about the Jordanelle Gondola, whose cabins are the standard size of the 6 passenger gondola made by its Swiss maker, but DV only puts 4 people in it. The exterior was painted at the BMW factory in Stuttgart using the same paint BMW applies to its most expensive cars. The seats are also made by BMW using the same leather found in BMW's top of the line cars. A DV ski valet takes your skis at the base and puts them in the ski carrier on the gondola cabin. At the top of the ride, a DV ski valet takes your skis out of the ski carrier and hands them to you when get out of the gondola cabin.

A note on food: I would not argue with any one who claims that the food found in the ski restaurants in the Alps is the best in the world, but I would also say that DV is just as good, and DV's food is, hands down, the best ski food in North America.

When Victoria was Queen, England held a great sailing race around the Isle of Wight. The USA sent the yacht America to enter the race. Queen Victoria and the First Sea Lord waited at the finish line to welcome the victor. A sail came in sight. The First Sea Lord looked through his spyglass and said, "It's the America".

The Queen asked, "Who is second?"

The First Sea Lord studied the horizon through his glass and replied, "Madame, there is no second."

That's what Deer Valley is. First place, and there is no second.
