In May this year my husband and I travelled from Toronto to Vancouver by Via Rail and I can certainly recommend it. Check-in was extremely well run and soon we were on the train but I have to say first impressions were not good. The compartment was already made up for sleeping with 2 bunk beds and space was very limited. However, on the plus side we had our own toilet and wash basin and the bunk beds were very comfortable. During the day the beds were collapsed and 2 seats took their place but we did not stay in the compartment we spend most of our time in one of the 5 dome cars which afforded spectacular views all along the journey. Scenery, particularly as we approached the Rockies was at times breath taking and along the way we had 3 short stops at Winnipeg, Edmonton and Jasper in the heart of the Rockies. We discovered we could have broken our journey at Jasper and joined up with the next train a couple of days later and on reflection we would have done this had we known about it. Service on the train was excellent, food amazing when you realised what short space they had to provide this from and all day you could get free tea, coffee, water, juice, biscuits and fruit. I had great reservations about this journey but I have to say I can strongly recommend it and it certainly is a scenic and easy way to cross the vast expanse which is Canada without the hassle of flying.
