Pre-Tour Arrangements

We booked the holiday well in advance and were very impressed with the information provided; the arranging of visas and prompt response to our queries. The other benefit in travelling with Wendy Wu is that everything is included in the cost of the tour – there were no extra’s other than drinks or personal purchases.

Flights

We chose to fly with Vietnam Airlines as this was the only airline offering direct flights from the UK to Vietnam we also opted to upgrade to Premium Economy and (given the relatively low additional cost) would recommend that the additional cost is well worth paying. The flight out was on a fairly modern Boeing 777 which was equipped with rear seat entertainment screen and good quality audio. The food and drinks were also very good and certainly of an equal standard to that of most other long-haul operatives with whom we have flown. The return flight was less satisfactory as although the food was OK the aircraft – an ageing Boeing 777, was in a poor state and there was no entertainment whatsoever.

Itinerary

The tour covers three countries namely Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos and given the relatively short duration (16days) the tour covers a lot of ground. We found the tour pace to be relatively relaxed although there are a number of local flights and coach journeys, however given the average age of our tour group (65+) no one complained (too much!) that the pace was overly taxing. The itinerary covered all the main areas that we wished to see in each country whilst allowing (some!) free time for shopping! The main highlights for us were – Vietnam – Hoi An and Halong Bay; Laos – Luang Prabang and the picnic at the Kuangsi Waterfalls and in Cambodia the temple complex at Angkor Wat and Beng Mealea.

In all of the countries visited the tour guides were excellent, organising everything with exemplary efficiency and having an extensive knowledge of each area and site visited.

We found the food to be very good to excellent and in particular we liked the fact that – with the exception of our first night in Saigon – none of the meals were in hotels as we ate at a different restaurant each night. The quantity of food at each meal was ample; the food is however on the side of being delicately flavoured which some might find bland.

Accommodation

We found all the hotels at which we stayed to be of a very good standard the rooms being spacious, clean and well appointed – all hotels providing a full range of toiletries, a hair-dryer and an electric kettle. Some of the showers could best be described as idiosyncratic and some ingenuity was needed to avoid flooding the whole bathroom.

Conclusion

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed the tour which met all our expectations and we would recommend the tour to anyone who wishes to see some of the main points of interest in the three countries. The choice of carrier is the main issue as to whether you wish to fly direct with Vietnam Airways or chose another carrier and fly via a change in say Kuala Lumpur or Thailand etc.
