We flew from Luton – appalling traffic jams into airport, ridiculous drop-off charge, long queues at check-in, worse queues through security. Once in Geneva, we felt our holiday really began as, to get to Saas Fee, we travelled on the Swiss railway to Visp for a couple of hours, which was a very scenic ride along Lac Leman. From Visp we got the postbus along valleys and up mountains into Saas Fee.

Chalet Hotel Ambassador is one of three catered Inghams hotels. (We stayed at the one in Chamonix last year and enjoyed it so much we thought we would try another). Our bedroom was very large and comfortable with a sitting area and balcony. The hotel has its own swimming pool which is a nice extra. Dinners are very special, commencing with an aperitif and canapes in the bar then an extremely well-presented and beautifully cooked meal in the restaurant with as much wine as want – all included in the price). You also get a daily packed lunch plus afternoon tea and cake which makes it very good value for money as we found the Swiss prices for everything very expensive indeed. Staff at the hotel are all English, extremely friendly and helpful.

Out and about in the resort, we walked miles – up and down mountains. Not much level walking except through the village itself where there are a surprising number of shops and restaurants. There is also summer skiing on the glacier. Would only recommend Saas Fee if you are fit and healthy not really suitable if you have disabilities which make you less mobile.

I spent a week's holiday in Saas Fee with my aunt when I was about 20. It was summer so we used the ski lifts to get us up to the high alpine pastures. To someone brought up in the London area it was magic.
