We spent a fabulous 8 days on ‘The Letty’ visiting 10 Galapagos Islands. The Letty is a small motor cruiser just 18 passengers, 11 crew and 2 superb guides. This was an English speaking group all good fun, 10 from USA, 4 Australians and 4 Brits. An older age group, apart from one young couple on their honeymoon!
This was a very active holiday with swimming and snorkelling and hiking and kayaking on offer every day. The activities were extremely well organized, and the crew very helpful when transferring to the zodiac for the trips ashore and especially helpful for those less mobile passengers. I love an active holiday, but if you prefer a relaxing cruise, then I don’t think this is for you! We did have a siesta every day, as the afternoon activities didn’t start till 3pm.

We had a briefing every evening so we knew what to expect the next day. We learnt a lot about birds, marine life, giant tortoises, reptiles, flora and fauna. It is possible to get quite close to the birds and it’s hard to avoid the iguanas! So cameras were always at the ready. The guides were very conscious of the impact of tourism and made us aware of best conservation practices. I think what impressed me most was the opportunity to see species that exist nowhere else.

It was hot, we crossed the equator 4 times, but the Letty was air conditioned so a very comfortable temperature on board. The sea is a wonderful turquoise blue and so warm for swimming. We were offered wet suits for snorkelling mainly to prevent being stung by jellyfish, though we didn’t come across any when we were there.
We saw the giant tortoises at the Darwin Research Centre which is on Santa Cruz Island. This island has a population of about 10,000 people, the only island we visited which has a human population.

Our cruise started and finished at San Cristobel Island which has it’s own airport. We flew in from Quito, but flew back to Heathrow via Guayaquil and Madrid (Iberia).

We spent a similar week on the 'Flamingo', a sister ship to the 'Letty' in May 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Galapagos. The guiding was really superb and I would rate the holiday higher at 5 stars. It was expensive but definitely excellent value for money.
