I love tapas but hate the way that many of the newly-opened places, have a no booking policy leaving you to hang around the bar waiting for a table. Searching Google for a tapas bar in Covent Garden, I came across Condesa on Maiden Lane and was pleasantly surprised to find a reservations tab.

A table was booked and arriving early, we were offered a choice of seating. We’d read that it was small and indeed it was, with three tables for six at the back, three for two down the side and the rest being stools at the bar. The friendly waiter suggested the table near the door might be draughty, but it was good for two ladies of a certain age!

We started with a bottle of Codorniu Cava (reasonably priced at £25) and chose hot, salty padron peppers and hot, spicy Guindilla Olives to nibble on whilst we looked at the menu. We were told that the Roasted Chipotle Macona Almonds we originally wanted, had been roasted a little too long!

The menu is not extensive and consists of bocadillos (Spanish sandwiches), charcuterie and cheese plates and couple of other miscellaneous dishes. Condesa provides a Spanish/Mexican fusion as the word means countess in Spanish and is the name of a bohemian district in Mexico City. Having loved pork pilbil whilst holidaying in Mexico, I was disappointed that the pulled pork pibil bocadillo had run out, but the waiter suggested the pig cheek taco instead: four small flour tortillas with a generous serving of delicious, sweet and tender shredded meat. However, our favourite dish was a fondue of mozzarella and chorizo. It was simply melted cheese in a small dish with chorizo sliced on. At first the melting cheese had to be ‘knitted’ but as it cooled, it could be spread on bread.

It may have been because it was Christmas but the place had a great lively vibe. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and professional and quite happy for us to sit and order dishes one by one.

It’s not pretentious and although it’s small, it’s perfectly formed – I’ll definitely be back in the New Year.
