My first exposure to Bettys Café was 34 years ago in York. Since then I return to the restaurant every time I visit the city. A few years ago I was able to spend a week in Harrogate (see review) and had my first of many tastes at the flagship location on Montpellier Hill. When you first walk in there is a very tempting shop to the right which also has an extensive online service. On the left is The Montpellier Café Bar. Go through the bar and down the stairs into the tea room. Don’t worry if it looks full – there is another larger room down another flight of stairs. The surroundings remind you of a time gone by and the service and the food are impeccable. During that week I ate there just about every day trying out different things on the varied menu. Late afternoon and evenings there is a pianist playing in the Café. If you are lucky enough to get a window seat, you can look out over the gardens on Montpellier Hill.

Now whenever I am in the area, I always manage to be passing through Harrogate at lunch or dinner time. My most recent visit was this past May with one of my aunts. We had spent the day in Yorkshire and stopped at Bettys for dinner on the way home. As usual, we were not disappointed. I have relatives who have been disappointed because they could not get in due to the huge queue outside and did not have the time to wait. I have always been lucky and have always managed to time my visits when the rush is over or not yet begun. On this occasion, I had the chicken and avocado salad with three side salads: carrots, beets and cucumber and fennel (£10.95). My aunt had the pulled ham salad with the same sides (£10.95) and we shared a plate of chips (£3.50). Two elderflower bubblies were £6.00. It was delicious as usual.

The tea room and shop are open from 8:00 am until 9:00 pm and the bar opens an hour earlier.

If you find yourself at RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate, there is also a small Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms within the grounds. The website also lists locations in Ilkley and Northallerton in addition to the two in Harrogate and the two in York.

You might also be interested in checking out the cookery school.

We always manage to find a parking spot on the road (pay and display) within a couple of blocks from the restaurant.
