We have a silly little rule when we go on holiday, that we eat in a different restaurant every night and then on our last night we re visit the best one. This system has served (no pun intended) us well for over 25 years – until now when we broke our own rule. Let me explain, it is not often that you find a Taverna in Greece that you instantly fall in love with but this is what happened on our 2nd night in Pefkos. We have visited this resort several times in the past and each time we have decided upon a different restaurant to be "our Best" but then again we have never visited Taverna Nicolas before, I have no idea why as it is one of the closest to our apartment. This is the quieter end of Pefkos, the restaurant is at a junction of the main road and a road leading to a rocky beach (and also Dave Gilmour's Villa – he of Pink Floyd) and whilst we sat there we didn't spot vast numbers of holidaymakers (and possible diners) passing by. There were 3 other couples dining when we arrived so we opted for a table with a view to the sea and the coming sunset (as I've mentioned before, my wife does like to snap away at sunsets). Anyway, this taverna is slightly more expensive than those in the busier part of the town but is has courtesy and politeness to match. The owner came out with some corny lines eg "all the vegetables are from my garden" but he said them with a large grin. I chose Moussaka and my wife opted for "Champagne Salmon" – perhaps not a typically Greek dish – and both meals were excellent. Along with a half carafe of wine the meal came to just over 30 euros. Breaking all the rules 3 nights later we were back there again, It was busier this time but we managed to get our sea view table. A lovely greeting from Owner and waiter, I cheekily asked for vegetables from his garden to which he laughingly agreed. We were introduced to the owners wife, mainly to show off his young baby I think, you would have thought we had been regular there for years. This time I chose Lamb shank whilst my wife chose Spaghetti Bolognaise (another Staple Greek dish!!!) which, again were excellent. Breaking another rule I had a dessert whilst my wife had a coffee. The Bill was just over 34 Euros. With over a week to go we had chosen our "last night" venue and so it was 10 days later that we returned to taverna Nicolas. I chose Lamb Kosti whilst my wife couldn't resist the Champagne Salmon again. Both were lovely and I'm not sure I can wait until next years holiday for our next visit.
