The Royal Oak in the Market Place in Helmsley is a good old fashioned traditional pub. It is a friendly place popular with both locals and visitors and has both lounge and public bars.

Having checked the menu and selection of real ale on offer, it seemed a good choice for an evening meal.

There were three hand pumps with Marston’s Pedigree, Jennings Bitter and Ringwood Fortyniner. This is the guest beer but has proved so popular it has been kept on. All three were in excellent condition and I settled on the Jennings and husband the Ringwood. The barmaid was helpful, informative and knew her beers.

The menu is traditional pub grub, nothing fancy or trendy, with a choice of steak pie, scampi, ham, egg and chips, lasagne or pizzas. The specials board board had beer battered haddock with chips and mushy peas, or roast lamb with all the trimmings.

We quickly decided on the steak pie. This came with a choice of either chips or veg. We chose one of each to split between us. Veg included peas, carrots, cabbage and new potatoes. Chips were freshly cooked and crisp. The steak pie was excellent with big chunks of tender tasty meat in a thick gravy and topped with a slab of shortcrust pastry. It was a big plateful and we couldn’t manage a sweet afterwards. At £9.95 we felt it was very good value.

I often think the quality of a steak pie sorts out the sheep from the goats, and I’ve had some goats in my time. Not this time and it is hardly exaggerating to say this was one of the best pies I’ve eaten. In fact we enjoyed it so much, we were back in the following night for another helping.

Daughter and I are just back from a long weekend in Helmsley and we ate in the Royal Oak both nights. The steak pie was as good as I remembered.

The beer was in excellent condition. Rigwood's Boon Doggle, Banks Bitter an Wychwood Dirty Tackle.

It was a good value meal. It is hard to find a good steak pie restaurant these day. You manage to find one, well done.
