We had been round Belton house and were in need of a cup of tea. The Stables Restaurant closes at 5.30 but by 4.30 the cake selection was well picked over and uninspiring. We were very disappointed as last visit (admittedly many years ago) there had always been a good selection of cakes with unusual offerings like chocolate and beetroot or parsnip, both very good. Today there was Victoria Sponge, scones or tray bakes (flapjack, rocky road, rice crispies cake or chocolate fudge slice). There were a few sandwiches left in a chiller cabinet.

The selection of herbal tea was equally restricted.

Husband settled on flapjack and a scone; daughter the chocolate fudge cake with a pot of tea between them. I passed on the cakes.

It is rather a characterless room with light wood tables and a few old photographs of the Belton estate on the walls. A wooden door leads into the stables with some tables set up inside the stalls. There is more seating outside.

The tea pots were large and with a cup of hot water ran to three cups. The scone was warm and nice, but the flapjack and chocolate fudge cake were pronounced as ordinary. We felt prices were expensive. Overall a disappointing experience.
