Maria's restaurant is hidden within the Edificio Nautico Suites sea front apartment block on a rocky peninsular in the Golf del Sur resort. I had passed it on my daily coastal run and was drawn in by a wall poster advertising a dinner dance with a saxophonist. Lycra'd and sweaty I was given a warm welcome and offered the last table available and dashed back to our hotel to change.

The spacious interior is set out in the style of a cruise liner interior with majestic pillars, shiny wooden floor and different layers. Although every table was full, we did not feel crammed in. We were served promptly and service throughout the evening was efficient and friendly.

As we settled in to our starters, the saxophonist began working his way expertly through a wide ranging list of dance favourites. Many of the (mostly) silver-haired diners who had arrived earlier, elegantly rose up and swept onto the dance floor gliding cheek to cheek and toe to toe in impressive and well-rehearsed routines. They were an absolute pleasure to watch but slightly intimidating, as I felt completely unable to get alongside them and do my usual wild "jiggling about"! Entranced, I barely noticed my food – Prawn tempura with chilli sauce – which was pleasant but the batter was not as crisp as I would have liked. My husband's garlic mushrooms were, he said, OK.

My main course – salmon steak, veg and Canarian potatoes with lime mayonnaise – was tasty, though the potatoes, cooked in their skins in the traditional way, are invariably dry. Husband was not over-excited by his rack of lamb and saffron rice. I tried a dessert – a cinnamon bread pudding which was a mousse-like consistency, served with fresh strawberries and a couple of squirts of cream.

All in all, it was a pleasant evening with reasonably priced food that was well-presented and but slightly underwhelming. The attentive service and the sheer pleasure of watching our fellow diners (most of whom were at least 10-15 years older than us) throwing their "shapes" on the dance floor made me more than willing to visit again.
