We had spent the morning in Scunthorpe Museum with Number One Grandson as there was an exhibition celebrating 100 years of the local bus company Hornsby and went to the cafe for a drink and cake before we came home.

Reached through the courtyard in the centre of the museum, there is a small inside seating area with the counter. It is bright and cheerful with red and white checked tablecloths and bright red plastic seats. In the summer the metal tables in the courtyard outside would be a pleasant place to sit, but not on a cold January day…

It was a lovely warm room and we were given an equally warm welcome by the lady behind the counter. I don’t think they get much trade and there was rather a basic choice of food. Although the menu on the website refers to a ‘specials board’ we weren’t aware of one.

The sandwiches seemed to be rather uninspiring cellophane wrapped rolls. There was a Victoria sandwich, chocolate buns and scones. Grandson chose a chocolate bun which had a thick layer of buttercream icing and a small piece of flake. He demolished this, leaving the very ordinary bun for me to finish. Husband had a scone which was large and filling although a little dry and stodgy. He said he should have asked for it to have been warmed up.

We were told there was no coffee which didn’t bother us and to my delight there was a choice of herbal tea.

It is the first time we’ve used the cafe. Prices were reasonable, but the choice of cakes unexciting. I think someone must have thought a cafe in the museum was a good idea but hadn’t done their research to see if it was a viable option. It won't get the shopping trade as it is the wrong part of town. Maybe it is more popular in the summer. The cafe in 20-21 Visual Arts Centre at the opposite end of Scunthorpe is better.

Ignore the google map which is wrong. The Courtyard Cafe is in Scunthorpe Museum. This can be located using the post code DN15 7BD in google maps. The grid reference is SE891108.
