20-21 Visual Arts Centre is in a redundant church at the bottom of Scunthorpe High Street. Now an exhibition centre, it has an excellent cafe serving a range of sandwiches, cakes and hot snacks. Daughter had told me their jacket potatoes were very good, so we arranged to meet up for lunch.

The cafe is a pleasant area in a modern extension to the church. It is popular with all ages who meet up for a chat over a hot drink and cake or for lunch.

The jacket potatoes were large and as good as I’d been told with a crispy skin and fluffy centre. Fillings were generous and they were served with salad and a small helping of coleslaw. I was spoilt for choice with tuna fish and sweetcorn, chilli, chicken tikka… In the end I chose red leicester and cheddar cheese with spring onion in a mayonnaise dressing. Daughter was more conservative with baked beans and cheese. It was a big plateful for £3.60 and we didn’t have room for a cake. There is a sign saying these are homemade.

They also serve homemade soup, smoked haddock fishcakes with chips, mediterranean vegetable tartlets with salad. The daily specials included cottage pie, chilli and rice or chicken tikka and rice.

As well as sandwiches, toasties, bagettes they also do toast, toasted tea cakes and chip butties. View menu.

Before leaving, we went to have a look at the current exhibition, but it was a bit too esoteric for our tastes, unlike the cafe with provides good basic food at a very reasonable price.

Thanks for letting us into your secret of a good and reasonably priced place to eat. If I'm ever Scunthorpe way I will be sure to look it up.

Since posting this review, we have been back several times. The cafe continues to provide good food at reasonable prices. Todays choice was chicken curry which was an appetising smell as we arrived. It tasted as good as it smelt. There was also a good choice of cakes to follow.
