For anyone who watched the series "Broadchurch" this spring will be very familiar with the red/brown cliffs of West Bay and the shingle beach that is the western end of Chesil beach. What you may not know is that there is a super little restaurant on the beach itself. It is located behind the Bridport Arms Hotel and sits at the edge of the pebble beach. (Be warned it is very painful to walk on that beach in sandals as the pebbles are very small) The Watch House is a small place with some outside tables, and a canvas extension area. On the day we visited it was packed with holidaymakers all tucking into delicious food. They have a wood fired oven and the chef was very busy making pizzas and roasting fish. The fish is caught by 3 local boats, two from Bridport and one from Weymouth so it is very fresh indeed. We tucked into a tempura battered mackeral bap, with homemade tartare sauce with lovely big chunks of gherkin in it, this was acompanied by a bowl of freshly cooked chips and another bowl of salad. The whole lunch was absolutely delicious as it was all so very fresh. Our fish had been caught that day by Jaimie in his Bridport boat. There was a smallish menu, mostly of fish and pizzas but it was all cooked fresh to order. We topped off our meal with a lovely bottle of organic apple juice from a local supplier and went off to walk up the hill to Eype (the next bay) to use up a few calories. If you wish for dessert, they looked to have several rather tempting ones including local ice cream. A really lovely lunch spot. They start serving lunches from 12noon. I am not sure if it is open in the evening, I also do not know if David Tennant ate there!
