Walking into Frankie and Benny's American Italian restaurant in Lichfield made me feel that I'd stepped back in time. Not to the era of the black and white photographs which help to create the atmosphere of the 1950s, but to when our sons were young teenagers and our local F&B was our favourite place to eat. A few things changed. More eateries opened up close by, our favourite staff at Frankie and Benny's left and sadly we found the service lacking. We moved on. Until we were staying overnight at Lichfield's Holiday Inn Express, well away from the centre of town and with two eating places next door – McDonald's or F&Bs. Easy to see which one we chose! We visited early evening on a Friday and the place was quite busy with several families and a birthday party. My Other Half (MOH) and I were seated in a booth and placed our drinks order. In an effort to cut down on Diet Coke I'd ordered an Appletise. Back came our server. Sorry, out of stock. Diet Coke it was! We opted for the special offer menu, two courses for £10.95 and liked so many of the dishes it was hard to choose. MOH chose a buffalo wings starter. I was saving myself for the puddings. The wings were duly served. Back to the menu to have another look. The celery sticks were missing. Our server was very apologetic and soon they appeared. However I noticed similar, celery-free starters lining up on the counter, so it wasn't a one-off. I'd opted for the Philly Chicken and Bacon Wrap and it was delicious. Very tasty, just the right balance of moisture, packed with meat and served with the crunchiest, hot chips. I was in heaven! MOH was tucking into his Cajun Chicken Calzone and again this was a winner. Both portions were very generous, so I was surprised when MOH announced he still had room for dessert. He chose Hot Chocolate Waffle and I had Apple and Cinnamon Crumble with custard. By this time I was pretty full, but I couldn't bear to leave a drop. There was a notice for free wifi, so we decided to check emails on our ipad over coffee, which was very good in decent-sized cups. We were seated quite near the serving point so couldn't help overhearing that they had run out of fish for the fish and chips. Judging by the number of times we heard this mentioned as orders were placed and then had to be changed, there must have been a few disappointed customers. Overall, the meal was good value and we had a pleasant evening despite the minor hiccups. We also noticed that they have a wide range of menus now, starting with breakfasts at £5 each (unlimited tea or coffee, £1.50). A lighter options menu offers main courses at 650 calories or less, with a range of starters and desserts at 300 calories or less. Tempting as these were, I think if I end up in a Frankie and Benny's restaurant on my travels, I will have to order a dish that includes those delicious chips!
