Having only been on unguided holidays with Headwater before, we were not keen to do a guided one, but given no choice in Costa Rica, we took the plunge and were very glad we did.

Our guide, Larry (his mother was a film fan but I am not sure which star he was named after!), had an encyclopaedic knowledge of flora, fauna, volcanoes and all things Costa Rican (including history and politics) and our driver Carlos, a gentle giant, was definitely the best driver on the road, so we were very well looked-after. You really do need local help because you walk in three very different areas.

We started in the coffee plantations of Alajuela and did a tour of a coffee plantation before moving onto the beautiful Monteverde Cloud Forest. The accommodation here is quite superb. Then we moved on to two different volcanic regions. One of the highlights of the tour was staying in the Arenal Observatory. This was built for the use of scientists after Arenal erupted in 1968 and, even today, you can see and hear red-hot rocks tumbling down the mountainside from your hotel window. Comforting to be told by Larry that if the mountain did erupt again we would not know anything about it – but that this was unlikely to happen!

The low point was staying at a hacienda where the insects that stayed with the animals took nights off to stay with us: luckily I see that this accommodation has been replaced. (Oh and dealing with US officials at George Bush Airport, Texas but we can’t blame Headwater for that!).

You finish your tour at a lovely beach hotel and I can thoroughly recommend taking a few extra nights there, as we did, to unwind. Wildlife, river crossings, swimming in waterfalls, magnificent scenery. It’s a long way to go, but well worth the effort.

Very pleased to find this review from a link - even though the tour took place 6 years ago - as we are setting off for Costa Rica next week. Looking forward to an exciting adventure which includes river rafting and skywalks through cloud forests.
