What a wonderful experience. Sri Lanka is beautiful everywhere you look, including the views from the coach as you drive along. This tour does the usual bits and more. There were twelve guests on our tour, which is the maximum. We had a tour guide, driver and driver’s boy. They helped to make the tour special.

The hotels are not five star luxury, but are a good standard and in some amazing locations. Kithulgala Rest House is where the cast stayed when they filmed “Bridge on the River Kwai”. The river is just outside your door. We did some gentle rafting down it, and saw kingfishers, eagles, monkeys and huge water monitor lizards. (More exciting rafting is also available).

We had an early morning safari in Yala National Park and saw elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo. There are leopards in the park, but we were not lucky enough to see them.

The Sky Green hotel, Ella Gap is the highest in that area and looks right down the valley. Breathtaking views. There were humming birds right beside our balcony.

The scenery on the mountain train ride between Ella and Nuwara Eliya is amazing, and the train ride itself is a good experience.

Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage is on most tours’ itineraries and is not to be missed. There are about 75 elephants bathing in the water and you can feed them while their keepers take photos with your camera. We even got to pet a four day old elephant calf. On another day, in a different area, we had an elephant ride, which included the elephant walking into the river. We had the opportunity of riding on the elephant’s neck. The mahout took some nice pictures with our cameras.

Most tours don’t give you the opportunity to go cycling, but this one did. We cycled through native villages over fairly level roads. (No hills). It was great. The Sri Lankans are very nice, friendly people. We tourists are still a bit of a novelty to them, and they all come out and wave as we go along. We had coconut milk at one house. (First, the father had to climb the tree to get the coconuts.) We had a curry meal at another house. Delicious.

We ended up at Negombo, for the last two days. I recommend an early morning (eight o’clock would be fine) visit to the fish market, for some colourful photos. The market has a great array of fish including sharks and manta rays and just outside the market, the beach is full of fishermen tossing the sprats out of their nets.

We did all of the usual cultural things, like the climbing of Sigiriya, which is quite tough, but very worthwhile; the Temple of the Tooth ceremony at Kandy and the ancient site of Polonnaruwa, but it was the extra bits that made this trip so exciting.
