We spent the first night near Colombo aiport as we had a very long coach journey the next day to get to our base at Habarana, it took about five hours. The Cinnamon Lodge is a fastastic hotel with really excellent accommodation, food and service. The grounds there are extensive and you can walk along the lakeside and through the forest. Colourful birds, monkeys, chipmunks and monitor lizards are everywhere. It is also a great base from which to visit nearby attractions such as Dambulla, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa. Best of all for us were the National Parks where we saw herds of elephants up really close which was wonderful, as well as other animals and so many different bird species. This holiday involved lots of different daily tours but you stayed in one place so were able to unpack your suitcase – a big bonus from a ‘moving on’ tour holiday. So if you didn’t feel like getting up and going out, you didn’t have to. The only downside was the weather; it rained every day – a lot. My best advice would be to check weather conditions thoroughly before you book.

We stayed at the same cinnamon hotel when we visited Sri Lanka last February! It was amazing. So many animals everywhere! We were very fortunate with the weather, so maybe February is a better month to go?
Sri Lanka is such a beautiful country, so unspoiled. It ranks highest on my favourite list of countries.
