We were lucky enough to go on a cruise and this time we decided to try MSC and sail around Europe. We flew into Rome and transferred to our ship which was about 75 mins away by shuttle bus, no problems and a nice easy embarkation but have to say we were a little disappointed with the size of the cabin (cat and swing) but lovely and clean and right at the back of the ship so we could almost step from our cabin onto what we could pretend was "our" balcony. The food was delicious and we did enjoy visiting the other countries but I will let others know a few of the bad (for us ) points. Most of the other passengers were Mediterranean which was fine and what we were expecting but every announcement over the tanoys became a real bugbear, firstly in Italian then French, Spanish, German, English and Swedish. OK that is acceptable, we are on a Mediterranean cruise but all the shows were in Italian and nothing much else to do in the evenings, no quizzes or anything else unless you like bingo in every language. Smoking was everywhere and as I stopped smoking 18 months ago and the fact that we are not used to seeing smoking indoors anymore it felt and smelled a little strange! The most annoying aspect for us was that each port we docked in was a way from the city and you had to take a shuttle bus from the ship which varied between 15-25 Euros each which adds up quite considerably over the week but we discovered that MSC stands for the shipping company and they have ports in place for cargo rather than passenger cruises. The other drawback was the fact that passengers were leaving the cruise and new ones were coming aboard at every port, so that meant a lifeboat safety drill every day in every language. This also gave an uneasy feeling most of the time as passengers that are getting ready to leave seem to change the whole equilibrium of the ship whilst normally you all arrive/leave together. We enjoyed it but unless you like nothing more than very noisy, very smokey, very loud folk who just want to sit and drink coffee I would give it a miss. Oh, and don't get me started about manners!
