From Budapest to Nuremberg – Hungary through Austria and ending in Germany. Everyday was a great experience. We arrived in Budapest mid-day with a BA flight from Heathrow – straight onto the minibus and within 30 minutes in our balcony cabin which size wise wasn't as big as normal balcony cabin on a sea cruise but bigger than many hotel rooms I've stayed in. A light lunch on the Aquavit Terrace under the famous Chain Bridge and a stroll along the river into the shopping district.

With an Introduction by the Programme Director and a few quick drinks it became obvious that there were only two British couples on board the rest being mainly American with an odd Aussie or Canadian thrown in Dinner was a formal waiter served event or a lighter choice on the Aquavit terrace with the same at breakfast and lunch everyday.

Dinner was often themed with an Austrian Night and a Farewell 6 course dinner, there was always a good choice with wine, beer or soft drinks which were included. We were entertained most nights with a preview of the next day, cooking demonstrations a Singalong night and a fabulous Sounds of the Danube night on the last night – at which I was dragged up to take take part.

Each day had an included half day tour to the local sites, Fishermans Bastion in Budapest, the Old Town of Vienna, Melk Abbey and the WWII tour of Nuremberg to name a few. The coffee houses with their Strudel, the Schnitzel and the German sausages were all edible events not to be missed.

The service was second to none with a small but very attentive staff capped by the Programme Director Henrietta who appeared at every corner.

I was asked by the only other Brits aboard who were great company and by Jeannie the star American on board whether we would sail with Viking again – the answer is Yes – we have already booked to go the Viking Star next year – another River Cruise – maybe as for the price we could have had 14 days Concierge class in the Caribbean on the Eclipse.
