We had a lovely lunch and ship visit on the Azamara Journey today courtesy of Azamara Cruises and Silver Travel Advisor. The lunch and ship visit were the prize we won from entering a competition on the Silver Travel website for those who had links with WWII and we wrote to describe our father Jack’s war time experiences on HMS Pasteur, sailing in the Far East and being stationed in Ceylon. My sister Rose and our husbands Malcolm and Steve accompanied Dad on many holidays, most memorably back to Sri Lanka where he was stationed in the war. This was a very moving time visiting Colombo where he helped set up a sick bay and following this with a wildlife tour of the island. Dad particularly loved wildlife and was very fond of travel. We were so fortunate to enjoy many holidays with him. He loved safaris in Africa in particular and we went on several with him, the last in Kenya when he was 89! I mentioned in my competition entry that our very last holiday together with Dad was in 2011 and it was in fact on the Azamara Journey in the Caribbean. Sadly Dad died this year, aged 92, so it was a very memorable visit to the Azamara Journey today thinking about our last holiday with him. We remembered how we sat on our balconies and watched the dolphins as we left Miami and the beautiful Caribbean islands we visited.

We have enjoyed many cruises on various cruise lines and in fact the Quest and Journey are our favourite cruise ships and we immediately felt at home on our visit today. Our visit started with bucks fizz in the Looking Glass looking out over the Solent and there then followed a tour of the ship, visiting some areas that were very familiar to us and others that were not so much so (the gym for one!). We had an excellent guide from Azamara’s UK office, Lori Scanella, who gave us a great tour, despite having conducted similar tours in different parts of the UK already this week!

Our lunch in the Aqualina Restaurant was fantastic. We thought back to the time we ate there with Dad and how much he enjoyed it. What a delicious 4 course meal with wine they served us today and we all came out feeling very full.

As we prepared to leave the ship, we saw the new guests coming on board being handed their glass of sparkling wine and looking forward to a 14 night ‘Food and Wine Cruise’ visiting various ports including Guernsey, Bordeaux, St Jean de Luz and Lisbon. We couldn’t help wishing we could stay on board and join them!

Thank you to Azamara cruise line who always offer a warm welcome and great service, all of which we experienced again today. Thank you to Silver Travel Advisor and in particular Debbie Marshall for her friendly welcome and for making this visit for the 4 of us possible and thank you to our wonderful father Jack who inspired us to travel and generously enabled us to experience all the holidays we have enjoyed with him.
