The Glen Tarsan is a converted fishing boat with en-suite cabins, two of which are reserved for solo voyagers. And no single supplement! I was the only Brit accompanied by an Australian couple and seven Americans. All of a good age. Boarding and disembarking the 'Tarsan' are by tender and you need to be fit enough to negotiate the steps and landings (aided by the crew). Once settled in and underway we headed out on a unique experience. You should not go to Western Scotland and complain if it rains However Skipper Ian was skilled at guiding his vessel towards the better weather. The itinerary isn't fixed. It depends on the forecast. Be prepared for some seriously good eating. Michael from Colraine in Northern Ireland dished up grub worthy of a top-class restaurant. His pre-dinner canapes were hugely popular. Gavin and Stephen attended with efficiency and courtesy. Dinner wine is included We made our way north anchoring at Kyle where Michael went ashore to shop for sea-fresh scallops. Then to Portree for a short visit then round the top of Skye and down to the 'small isles'. This far north, in August there are flowers in abundance, but apart from gulls, little bird-life. Ian explained, the nesting season being over, they had flown out to sea. Then there was the aquatic wildlife. A pod of dolphins hitched a ride on the Tarsan's bow-wave and I dashed to my lower-deck cabin to fetch my camera. I didn't bother, for outside my window, at eye-level, were those mesmerising creatures racing through the water with magnificent elegance. Later, we saw a group of Orcas, four I thought, two adults shielding two young ones. Of the anchorages, I found Tobermory most delightful. The colours of its harbour-front buildings were brilliantly lit by the evening sunlight. Then it was back to Oban. On the practical side, all pre-embarkation arrangements were handled efficiently by Marie. Can't say more. All told, a wonderful holiday.
