As cruise virgins, we were slightly apprehensive about being on a ship with 18 decks and 4,000 people.

On reaching the port in Genoa, we weren’t sure what to do or where to go. On uttering the immortal words, ‘We’re in the Yacht Club, can you help?’ a white-gloved butler scooped up our hand luggage and escorted us past waiting queues. At our personal VIP check in desk a glass of wine and buffet tempted whilst the paperwork was completed.

Our Yacht Club cabin (one of only 71) was large, extremely well equipped and immaculately clean. A waiting chilled bottle of prosecco was drunk sat on our balcony. Whilst Ismael, our personal butler, unpacked our suitcase, we selected lunch from the small buffet at The One Pool on the sun deck.

At dinner, Ismael escorted us through the main ship to L’Olivo restaurant where we could dine at any time. Our table for two and its window seat provided views as we tucked into a splendid five-course meal with wine. After dinner drinks were taken in the Top Sail Lounge.

Moving between the Yacht Club and restaurant was the only time we came into contact with the rest of the cruisers who appeared to be mainly Italian and Spanish families. The difference between the peace and tranquillity of the Yacht Club and the Butlins' type atmosphere in the rest of the ship was vast.

The 142 Yacht Club passengers (which included the AC Milan football team) had exclusive use of decks, pools and restaurants and all food and drinks were included.

Whilst we could have used L’Olivo for both a la carte breakfasts and lunches we preferred the more intimate, al fresco buffets on the sun deck. In fact this is where we spent most of our time having decided that as we’d already visited all the ports we called at, we never left the ship!

So how was our first cruise? Because of the Yacht Club, I never felt I was on a huge cruise ship. It was like being in a 5 star hotel which provided constantly changing views as we stopped at the various ports. I also liked the informality where ‘formal night’ simply meant smart casual wear. However, it may have been a very different matter if I’d not been in the Yacht Club.
