We did this trip as a party of 6, 3 brothers plus wives, to celebrate a joint 70th birthday. We were met at St Petersburg airport by very efficient, helpful staff & transferred by coach to our ship. As a Saga group we had 2 tour guides, a ship board one & a Saga rep, they both accompanied us everywhere. we were quickly checked in & given our cabin keys. The cabins are small but adequate, not a lot of storage space & a very small bathroom, but we knew this before we went, research is vital! One helpful item we took were several packing cubes, zipped holders of various sizes. We had 1 each for tshirts etc & 1 each for underwear, they were a godsend, out of the cases on to a shelf. We had a welcome meeting giving lots of helpful info about the trip, leaving & reboarding the ship etc. We visited many very interesting places, our favourite was St Petersburg. All the daily excursions were included in the cost & there was 1 optional afternoon, & 1 evening trip in St P & also 1 optional evening in Moscow. I am a very fussy eater & was worried about the food, but I didn`t go hungry at all & the waitresses were lovely. We had several birthdays aboard during the cruise & they had musicians & a typical Russian cake for everyone. When it was or familys joint birthday they made a big fuss, they hadn`t had twins before so they had 2 cakes & the bar staff refused payment for a bottle of Champagne! The Rep said in 4 years aboard she had never known them to give anything free, maybe we were very good customers!! We did a bit of independent sightseeing & used the Metro in St P & Moscow, an experience not to be missed, do it yourself, have been told the organized trips use quieter, further out stations which are not so spectacular. Help was offered a few times on the Metro, must have been the blank looks trying to read the signs, not in English, Russians seem a bit aloof but are ready to help if asked & some want to practice their English skills. We all thoroughly enjoyed our trip but I would advise flying in to Moscow & back from St P as Moscow airport is a nightmare, as is the journey to it, the traffic everywhere is horrendous, so a lot of time spent getting from A to B. It may be a bit better arriving than departing. Go, enjoy yourself & keep an open mind & you will have a great time. One of the best value for money trips we have ever done & we`ve done a few!!
