The Ship was waiting for us at Berth 104 in Southampton. It was our first experience of 104 – what a strange place!!

We boarded just before 11am in Group 4. Our group leader was the Future Cruise Rep from the ship. It really was a whistle stop tour of the ship. She didn't stop for anyone. Consequently, we were almost running through the lounges and didn't hear any of her commentary.

Our impressions of the ship, though, were good despite her (the ship) being rather unattractive from the outside in our opinion. The Opera is just 58000 tonnes and can hold 2000 passengers.

There were plenty of bars and sitting areas. The theatre was a good size and I would imagine you would get a good view from wherever you sat.

There was no 'Crows Nest' up front but there was a lovely lounge area on a high deck aft with floor to ceiling windows all round. There was also a sitting area just outside which we really liked.

There was also a Show Lounge. We were told that the first language on board is English. We were also told by another rep that MSC is on a par with Silversea and Cunard. Er? I don't think so!!

What really impressed us was the maintenance and cleanliness of the ship. Have you ever leant on or held the wooden handrail on a ship? Usually it is rather rough or a bit sticky. On Opera, the varnish was as smooth as can be. Amazing.

Also, the wooden decks looked as it they had been scrubbed every day.

The sunbeds looked brand new and there were plenty of them. There was plenty of deckspace and a nice solarium area up top forward. Sadly for us there was no table tennis tables but they did have table football which is not exactly my scene.

The buffet looked interesting on our flying visit. There were pizzas ready to go and all sorts of meats hanging up. A bit like a deli.

We sat down for our 7 course lunch and actually settled for 4 courses. We both had the seafood cocktail for starters which was delicious. And what is it about those lovely ship's bread rolls. Yum!

Ron then had a fish soup which he said was delicious and I had a salad with thousand island sauce (plenty of it).

For our main course, Ron chose the steak in a mustard sauce and I chose pork in a madeira wine sauce. Everyone on our table said the steak was tough. My pork was OK but somewhat overcooked.

For desert, we both had Apricot Tart with a Strawberry sauce. Small but tasty.

The portions were not huge but we were satisfied.

Unfortunately, we didn't get the opportunity to see any cabins as the ship was full. Also, out of interest, they have multiple boarding ports. I don't know how they get on with muster.

Unless you can see a daily programme, it is difficult to see whether the ship would be to our taste but, from what we saw of it, we would be more than happy to give her a go.
