We had never been on a cruise before and were a little apprehensive about what to expect when we set off for a Danube Cruise on the MS Johann Strauss courtesy of Noble Caledonia. The cruise surpassed all expectations and we will certainly holiday this way again in the very near future.

We flew to Munich where we were met and efficiently transferred by coach to Regensberg, a beautifully preserved medieval city, where we boarded our cruise ship. Within minutes our luggage appeared in our cabin. Our cabin was far more spacious than we expected and designed to make the most of the space provided. After sufficient time for a rest and change we were extended the warmest of welcomes with a wonderful dinner. The food did not disappoint and throughout the cruise the food and service were first class.

Meals are served in one sitting with an open seating policy. This allows you to meet fellow passengers and each day add to the number of new acquaintances, many of whom have fascinating stories to tell.

Each evening the Cruise Director outlines the programme for the following day and a written daily programme is provided in your cabin. The programmes are extremely well organised but you do not feel in any way regimented. There are daily excursions to the towns and cities along the Danube, some walking tours, others a combination of coach and walking sightseeing. The excursions are in small groups with well informed guides. Everyone has a small receiver and ear piece so you can hear your guide without the need to cluster in close, and this allows you to wander off a little to find that perfect photographic opportunity whilst still receiving your guide’s commentary. Time is also given to allow you, if you so wish, to explore a little more on your own. Small maps of your next day’s destination are available at reception the preceding evening as are small slips giving the address of your disembarkation point, the ship’s phone number, along with the phone number of a local taxi – just in case you get lost! It is this kind of thoughtful attention to detail that makes the cruise all the more relaxing and enjoyable.

We travelled at the beginning of November, the last cruise of the season, and were lucky to be blessed with beautiful weather. The season starts in May, and despite the months the crew had spent working extremely hard to make the cruises such a wonderful experience, each and every member remained cheerful, polite and courteous. They were all an absolute joy.

I haven’t mentioned the ports of call! All well chosen, all with their own atmosphere and history, but for us the final port of call at Budapest was very much the case of saving the best until last.

This was our first experience of river cruising, and thanks to Noble Caledonia, it may well be the first of many.
