On the 'spur of the moment' we booked a cruise to Norway with Fred Olsen Cruise Lines on Balmoral. She is a slightly larger ship than we have been on before but we didn't get lost once!! Living in Dorset makes a departure from Southampton ideal. We had five ports of call and all were easily accessible from the ship. At two ports we were 'tendered' ashore so maybe this wouldn't be suitable for severely disabled passengers, although many people with some difficulties were ably helped by the crew. We like the idea of using the lifeboats as it gives you confidence in the crew's ability to use them in an emergency. What can I say about Norway? The views and scenery are stunning. The Norwegain people all speak perfect english and are so welcoming and friendly. It is expensive but the advantage of being on a cruise is that you can go back to the ship for your meals. Our main reason for traveling with Fred Olsen is the friendliness and helpfulness of the crew. On the last evening, after the Gala Dinner, the crew put on their own show. They practice in their own time off, which is very limited and they put on the most fantastic show. What talented staff, they are. Of course, as with any cruise, you can do as little or as much as you want of the activities on offer. Sometimes it's difficult to choose which activity you will join in with.
