We travelled on Royal Caribbean “Independence of the Seas” to the Canary Isles – a 12 day round trip from Southampton. We had pre-booked car parking at the dock and this was very efficient – it was an easy walk from the car park to the ship. Boarding was rather slow – apparently they had earlier had computer problems but our cabin was ready when we finally boarded – just in time for a slightly hectic but pleasant lunch.

All lunches were buffet style – there was always a range of food to suit all tastes. They were very good with a wide range of food – everything from burgers to roasts and curries. The restaurant tended to be very crowded – not so much at the actual buffets but more finding empty seats. We were fortunate in that as we had booked a grand suite we could sit in the speciality restaurants where we could always get a seat looking out to sea and had drinks etc brought to us. Dinner was a much more relaxed affair for everyone with waiter service. We thought the drinks – both alcoholic and soft were rather expensive though coffee and tea were always available.

The ship is huge – with a complete street of shops etc down the middle, a climbing wall, several pools and an ice rink. The show at the ice rink was excellent – better than “Holiday on Ice” which we had been to the previous year. There were plenty of children’s clubs and splash areas but we were travelling without children.

We would travel with Royal Caribbean again – in fact are doing so next year – but would advise having a grand suite if you can afford it – we got a good deal. As well as the special peaceful restaurants in which to eat the buffet meals we had a concierge lounge where free alcoholic drinks and canapés were served early evening and we could also go into the lounge at any time for a coffee and to read the newspapers. We also had priority tickets and seating for the shows so we never had to queue for anything. There was also a reserved sun bed area by the pools which we used several times. We looked in several of the other cabins and they all seemed a good size so would be absolutely fine if you don’t mind the hustle and bustle of good natured queuing.

We did not go on many of the official tours are we had visited much of the area before. The ones we did were well organised and fairly good value and we enjoyed them. The tours did not seem particularly popular – perhaps because other people had also been to the area before.
