I had read mixed reviews about the Thomson Destiny – mainly critisisms of its age – but I needn't have worried. Yes, the our cabin was 'cosy' – but we weren't paying a 'luxury' price and to be honest, we spent very little time in there.

The cabin crew often used to surprise us with towels artistically tied into 'monkeys' and so forth – a delight for children, of course! This talent sometimes extended to the evening meal with specially folded napkins.

We had chosen a cruise because my husband is disabled, but had plenty to do 'on board, whilst we enjoyed the various excursions on offer. Yes, they were a little pricey sometimes and it was much cheaper to 'do it yourself', but the comfort of knowing that we would never be stranded ashore should anything go wrong was enough to persuade myself and many others to book. We visited such places as Nice, Monte Carlo, Monaco, Rome, Pisa, Barcelona and Corsica. We even had a little time to spare in Palma itself, where we toured the cathedral.

On board, meals were superb. Food was available almost 24/7 and there was something to suit every taste. We did not go 'all inclusive' with regard to drinks like some – I believe that offers were to be had if you rebooked for another cruise whilst on board. We were 'careful' with our drinks comsumption, so were not stung in the credit card department – (this was a 'cash free' cruise). The evening entertainment was worthy of great praise also – the quality of a show in a London theatre with something different every evening – which surprised us.

There were other activities, such as sports and line dancing on offer too. Our daughter enjoyed the kids' club and made many new friends.

We did how to prepare ourselves to be photographed and filmed at every opportunity with the resulting DVDs and photographs on sale. We were only tempted once and purchased a photo of when we were dressed up for the 'Gala Dinner'.

A novelty for us and perhaps not the most 'grand' holiday – described by some as being like 'Butlins at sea' – but we enjoyed it and would certainly try another cruise sometime in the future!
