The MSC Splendida is a very large (and beautiful) modern ship with almost 400 passengers. With size comes an enormous range of facilities – lounges, restaurants, theatre, pools, jacuzzis etc etc. But with so many people, it can sometimes feel very crowded and the sheer size of the boat (a third of kilometre long) means that it usually has to tie up at the outermost edges of even the largest and most modern ports.

Nonetheless, the value is outstanding. The food selection is first class and the ship is maintained to a very high standard. Cabins are quite spacious and cleanliness is clearly a high priority throughout. As they say in their marketing – the ship is a destination in itself!

There is actually no need to spend any money beyond the basic fare although many opportunities exist to do otherwise. Tours are quite expensive as are photos and alcoholic drinks. The passengers are multinational and thus only a small proportion have English as their first language (say 10-15%.) The majority of passengers are Italian.

Our flight from the UK was Heathrow to Milan with a transfer by bus to Genoa. OK on the way out but irritating on the way back because of the enforced long wait at Milan airport.

In conclusion, we are happy to recommend this cruise but be aware of the few negative aspects which may bother some more than me!
