Just got back from the transatlantic cruise on the QM2 from Southampton to New York.

Everything went like clock work on boarding and as we were in the Queens Grill ( a special treat) our butler was there to make sure that we didn't need anything yet.

The suite was amazing – masses of room, a balcony, huge bed so we could lose each other if we wanted too, a desk and sofa. The bathroom had a whirlpool bath and shower. Admittedly our balcony was on the starboard side it didn't matter much as when you are at sea there isn't a lot to see.

Dining was where ever you like but as we were in the Queens grill we ate in there every night. Whilst the Todd English restaurant might be wonderful the food we had, lobster, Chateaubriand, steak tartare, calves liver and foie gras to name a few was out of this world and beautifully presented. We did decide to have the luxury of breakfast in the suite. Served at what every time we liked by the butler. A real treat.

On board activites were so wide rangling that however active or inactive you are there is something for all. We enjoyed bridge and art classes, shuffleboard, quoits, leactures, music, golf, and lots of walking round the deck. If you want to keep in touch with your friends and family there was of course, internet and even computer lessons for the luddites.

There was masses to do in the evening from shows to lectures, classical music to pub quizes but for the gambler amongst us craps in the evening was the order of the day. You can't beat Craps!! I played with a 40 year old and an 80 year old – so no barriers for age. They also gave lessons but people will always help you as it's a much more team gambling activity. Go shooter was my cry.

I know lots of people worry about 'such a huge ship, lots of old people' but life is what you make it and there is always someone older than you and indeeed younger. Space is certainly no problem. How could it be on such a large space. Quiet can always be had in the library or a spot on the deck.

The sightseeing highlight is of course coming into New York Harbour at 5.00 in the morning, the city lights twinkling and the worry that the funnel won't go under the bridge. Seems like it only misses by inches.

So If you think cruising isn't for you give it a whirl it's worth every penny and you escape in luxury being as selfish as you like.
