In order to enjoy a child free cruise, we booked a "stay & cruise" holiday – 1 week in Majorca at an adults only hotel followed by 1 week aboard the (supposedly) child free Dream.

Week 1 in majorca was fine – the nightmares started with transfer from hotel to ship. Our itinerary said TUI transfer but we were actually transferred in a rusty dirty minibus, crowded in with 5 others plus luggage. Driver did not speak English and obviously did not know way to Palma harbour and where the Dream was moored. After circling Palma twice, he eventually stopped outside the Norwegian Dream entrance and unladed our luggage – he would not listen to our complaints although there was no sign of the Dream. A staff member of Norwegian line pointed us in direction of quay where she said the Dream was located. This entailed a walk of c.1 mile carrrying/dragging our luggage up 2 flights of stairs and down 2 flights (no working lifts or elevators) before arriving at the Dream. Complaints to ship's officers on quayside were totally ignored.

On checking into cabin, husband went off to collect safety deposit box key – brochure and cruise joining instructions (received 10 days prior to departure) stated that the box was free. At reception, key was refused without payment of £14. It was pointed out to staff that box was free but they said there had been a change of policy and a fee of £14 was payable for a 7 day cruise.

Later that day, we quickly realised that the ship was not "child free" despite the latest edition brochure saying that throughout June, the Dream was child free. That night, we were kept awake by screaming and shouting youths running up and down the corridor. Complaints to reception were ignored. Next morning we discovered that 8 youngsters, aged around 13 – 15 were occupying 2 cabins directly opposite ours. These were part of a group of around 25 Spanish youngsters (male and female) all of similar age. Throughout the cruise our sleep was disturbed every night. Trying to use the swimming pool was a waste of time as they just took it over. Ship security totally ignored the noise and mayhem – perhaps because the group appeared to have no problems in spending large amounts of money on cocktails ! As before, complaints to reception were met by the response that there had been a change of policy.

On reurn to UK, a full written complaint was sent to Thomson – this too was ignored – after 3 weeks, the reply merely said "sorry the cruise was not up to your expectations".

After nearly 20 years of cruise holidays, this was our worse experience.

The Dream might just about be acceptable to large younger families who are on their first ever cruise and looking for a "Butlins type holiday" at sea.

Never again – for moderately priced superb cruises, will stick to P&O and Fred Olsen.
