Park City, UT, started out as a center for silver mining in the mid 1800s. When the mines played out, Park City almost disappeared from the face of the earth until it was resuscitated by Park City Mountain Resort in the 1960s. Today, Park City is one of the world’s top ski destinations because:

1) Park City is home to 3 world class ski resorts – Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley, and The Canyons. A few years ago I did the math and found that these resorts totaled 100 lifts and more than 300 named run .

2) Nowhere in the world has snow quality more suited to the recreational skier than does Utah. When Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics, staff had to go out every night and flood the race course with fire hoses to make the soft Utah snow surface icy enough for Olympic racers. You are not an Olympic racer. You will love Utah’s soft snow.

3) It’s just 45 minutes from SLC International airport to the three Park City resorts.

4) There are 7 more world class ski resorts – Sundance, Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, Brighton, Snow Basin, and Power Mountain within a 90 minute trip (or less) from Park City.

Park City has about 8,000 residents and 22,000 hotel beds. Nearby Salt Lake City has almost 18,000 beds (much cheaper than Park City during ski season, but you will need a rental car). Also, if you rent a car, check out lodging in nearby Heber City with its remarkably lower prices.

If you rent a car, should you worry about bad weather? I’ve lived in Heber City for 18 years. The worst driving conditions I ever encountered in going to ski in Park City – which I do almost everyday during ski season – required me to slow down to 45 mph.

We spent 32 years traveling around North America’s intermountain west looking for the best place to retire. For the last 18 years, we have lived in Heber City, just 20 miles from Park City and 9 miles to Deer Valley, because, if you want to live close to great skiing and great scenery, nothing beats Heber City. From the front of our house, we can see Sundance, Alta, Snowbird, Deer Valley, and the 2002 Olympic cross country course at Soldier Hollow.
