Now is the time we start thinking about escaping from the winter cold and planning a trip for the New Year. Earlier this year we went to the northern part of Tenerife but this time arranged through We arrived at our hotel but found it had been overbooked – a common occurrence apparently – so were sent to another hotel on the other side of town. Hotel Diamante – cell block H came to mind! A quarter-mile walk each way to the room along dark, airless corridors and two or three lifts depending on your mood. Entertainment? There was a man playing an organ on the two nights we were there, but we couldn’t tell if it was the same man as it was so dark in the room. Back to our original hotel, La Paz, in Puerto de la Cruz, No need to worry about entertainment here as there isn’t any. Take a pack of cards. A good trip we nearly did was to Masca, 12 Euro each including a meal. We waited 30 minutes but when the coach arrived they said “sorry, we are full!” Therefore, you need to book not just wait at the stop as the Miller Tours brochure says. In Avenue de Venezuela, Cafe Berlin does an excellent range of tapas at lunchtime. Just around the corner at Pagos del Ray there is the best Sangria served by the glass – well, virtually half-pint really. A green cocktail at the bottom of the glass, and red wine at the top, plus slices of fresh lemon, lime and orange to top it off. Do not stir until you have drunk the cocktail through the red wine! What a perfect lunch-time treat. Still in Puerto de la Cruz, in the main Compostolana Plaza, we had a mouth-watering mixed Paella for two, a bottle of good wine plus bread for 34 Euro. It is a very comfortable place to eat, especially inside the restaurants if it is cool and you are a non-smoker.
