My daughters very kindly treated my husband and myself to a short break in Winchester to celebrate (belatedly) his 70th birthday and our wedding anniversary.

What a treat! Our hotel was very central – just by the river and a short walk from the cathedral and town centre with all its shops, restaurants, cafes and historical sites. We were able to take full advantage of our location; going into most of the shops and getting several bargains in the sales.

We visited the cathedral where we had one of the best guides we have ever known. He held us enthralled by telling us the full history of the cathedral, which is one of the most beautiful we have ever seen. We had wanted to give him a tip afterwards to show our appreciation, but he was gone before we had the opportunity. We gave a donation to the cathedral funds instead.

We walked through the very peaceful cathedral grounds and ate and drank in some very atmospheric pubs and restaurants, including Pizza Express (twice) which we loved for its location next to the river and for the friendly staff who welcomed us warmly both evenings.

Winchester is very accessible by train being only about an hour from London. We travelled very cheaply, using my Senior Railcard and bus pass. I would definitely recommend it.

Oh yes – and the weather could not have been better when we were there – but maybe we just lucky!!

We had a great time here too. We bought the treasure trail guide to the city and St Catherines's Hill. it made a really interesting 4 hour walking circuit.
