It all began with an email.

My brother-in-law, (trip organiser extraordinaire) had been organising a trip to Brugge for some time for a party of twelve adults. The middle weekend in May was convenient for all and as the trip grew ever closer, it appeared we were to have the added bonus of excellent weather!

Over the past few months we have received emails updating on travel plans, Eurostar tickets, restaurant bookings, all very efficient and all what you would expect…but then, this email …

" Have you ever ridden a bike?"

"Do you still think you could ride a bike?

" Could your bottom cope with two hours on a bike?"

My husband and I looked at each other. What we had originally imagined to be a gentle stroll around beautiful Brugge was now evolving into something much more strenuous and potentially dangerous, considering one of us had only cycled once, and that was over five years ago and the other could not ever remember cycling! We shrugged and signed up for the " Guided Bike Tour of the Medieval City". With three doctors and a nurse in our party we would be well looked after should any medical emergency befall us!

Our apprehension was unfounded. We had a wonderful morning in the company of Jos and Natalie from "Quasimundo Bike Tours". It was true, some of us were a bit rusty, but a few minutes of wobbly practise outside the bike shed, and we were on our way through the cobbled passageways of Brugge and along the lush, green canalside. We had a wonderfully informative trip, punctuated with lots of laughs, a few hairy moments (when a bus driver apparently wasn't aware of the pedestrianisation rule,) and plenty of humorous anecdotes from Jos as he led us through a potted history of Bruges and its historic landmarks; The Belfry, St Salvatore Cathedral, Minnewater Park and The Beguinage, the historic windmills and much more! What a perfect way to see the town for the first time!

We ended our bike ride at the oldest pub in Brugge Cafe Vlissinghe for a well deserved glass of Belgian beer and more laughter and chat with Jos and Natalie. Our hosts had been delightful whether you were cycling up at the front and vying for the yellow jersey, or lagging a bit at the back as The Lanterne Rouge… go at your own pace, one of them will have you in their sight, ensuring you are ok.

We were all rather pleased with ourselves as we parked the cycles two and a half hours after we set out. No injuries, no accidents, everyone feeling very fit and healthy and a brilliant introduction to this very pretty medieval town.

In fact, the most difficult bit was deciding which beer to drink! There are so many of them here!
