We stayed at the Real Palacio Hotel near the north end of Edward II Park. From the hotel we were an easy 25 minute stroll downhill to the centre of Lisbon and a tiring climb back up to the hotel at the end of the day. Lisbon is a very hilly city and most pavements are made of small marble cobbles which can be quite uneven, so the first tip if you intend to walk everywhere is to take a good pair of shoes. We walked for the first two days of our holiday and then gave in and used the excellent public transport to give our legs a rest. Tip 2 – is to buy a day card for 6 euro for unlimited 24 hr use of the metro, buses, elevators and trams. Tip 3 – is watch your belongings we never felt threatened in Lisbon but I did have my phone stolen by a pickpocket on Tram 28E I don't think Lisbon is any worse than any other European city for pickpockets but it was annoying when it happened. Lisbon caters for every type of food from local Portuguese restaurants, to Indian, French, Italian and we had some really great meals. Tip 4 The bakeries or Pastillerias on side streets are very cheap for coffee and cake and beer. Tip 5 – Must see places in an around Lisbon – a) take the ferry across the river to Cacilhas and then take the bus 101 to Santuário Nacional de Cristo Rei the Jesus Christ statue – amazing views from the statue overlooking Lisbon. b) The Estufa Fria – cold house – is hidden away at the top western side of Edward II Park – and is a very peaceful botanic paradise – much better than the Lisbon Botanic gardens which we found very disappointing. c) take the train to Cascais a lovely little seaside resort about 35 minutes west of Lisbon – lovely small beaches and restauants. d) Take the train to Sintra and visit some of the amazing castles and gardens. We avoided the city sightseeing buses and did our own thing and really enjoyed this amazing city. The people are friendly and most speak English.

Thank you for the tips. I like visiting big cities but I don't like the stories of pickpocket. It put me off from visiting an cities.
