This pretty, tiny village in France has complex waterway canals and is known locally as Green Venice.

You can take a self guided rowing or punting boat round the waterways, but I strongly recommend hiring one of the guides to do the hard work. If you go on your own, you have to map read and you can miss your turning, with the guide, you can sit back and enjoy the peace as they tell you about the history and point out the wildlife and plants.

We didn't stay in Coulon, but if we return to this area, we would like to stay here. We did the boat trip twice, with different people and enjoyed it as much the second time. You can ask for an English speaking guide if your French is not good, and they quite enjoy practising their English.

There are different lengths of trip you can go on, the most popular being an hour, but we went on the hour & 15 mins and didn't see any other boats once we got past a certain point.

The cost is per boat, depending how long you go for, and they can fit 7or 8 people in. I think it was about E36 for our trip, which we though was excellent value.

I would imagine Coulon gets quite crowded in July/August, but there were not many people there on either day that we went in September.

We also walked along the river, which is very pretty too. There are some restaurants along the river, but we just wanted a snack and we found a nice snack bar in the square by the church, which has a clean disabled toilet.
