How about somewhere where the sun shines all day throughout December and January whilst is wet, cold and miserable in the UK? The region of Spain to the north of Almeria in eastern Andalucia is the only true desert in Europe. We had 3 weeks without rain and virtually cloudless skies and no rain! Admittedly, the nights and early mornings are cool but it soon warms up to UK Spring-like temperatures from mid-morning and there's the added benefit that the sun doesn't set till about 18:30.

Much of the landscape is stark with little depth of soil and scrubby plants. However, where the land has been cultivated, there are wonderful orange and olive groves; a true feast for the eyes. There are significant ranges of hills all along the eastern coast including the famous Cabo de Gata.

Transport links are exceptionally good. Almeria airport must be one of the most pleasant places to start (and end) a holiday with the adjacent and impressive E15 (Autovia del Mediterraneo) wending its way northwards to Murcia, Alicante, Valencia and beyond. To the north west, it's a relatively short drive to Granada. Not quite so far are the wild west theme parks where so many spaghetti westerns were made.

The coastal resorts are clearly very popular with the Spanish but little explored by the British. However, many expats have discovered this as an area to which to retire; in part because it is quite a bit cheaper to live here!
