If 20 million year old Madeira is on your bucket list than you may need a bigger bucket! So much is on offer. Start in pebble-paved Funchal. See the Se (cathedral). Glide effortlessly over roof tops in a cable car. Monte village is your ultimate goal. Go native and climb the 74 steep church steps on your knees! Walk beside a levada, meandering and hugging the island, often seemingly defying gravity. Know the difference between a cowshed and a palheiros? Don't mix your Espada(fish) with your Espetada(beef). What's your tipple? Madeiran wine? Or licor de castanha from the secret Valley Of The Nuns? If you can find it? Visit The Botanical Gardens, built on a slope, overlooking the cruise ships. At The Municipal Market an astonishing explosive palette of colours awaits. Is afternoon tea and crustless cucumber sandwiches at Reid's worth it? Probably not! But hey, it's another tick on your list.
