I visited the Isle of Man in september for a walking break. My friend Irene had not been there before and came with me. We had a wonderful time, the weather was good and the locals very friendly.

We stayed in St Heliers Guest House in Douglas, on the promenade with good views, great food and comfortable beds. Sue and Dave run the guest house with help from their son Mark.

The island was pretty quiet as we had just missed the motorbike grand prix and the bowling. This was perfect for us as walking was our priority.

The transport was second to none, including the electric railway, steam trains and horse trams. Timetables were very reliable, scenery excellent and very well presented hotels and local pubs kept us fed and watered for the week.

Highlights were numerous, including manx cats and loughtan sheep. Museums were interesting and the people working in them were very helpful, especially on one occassion when we needed the toilet and were invited in, even though our boots were very muddy.

We travelled from Glasgow, there were no flight delays, and a bus took us to Dougas.

Although we were two females we never once felt unsafe on the island. This is a big issue for us as we were without our husbands, but it was never an issue, indeed it felt safer than being at home.

We have already decided to go again next year as there were so many places we did not have time to visit in a week.

We've enjoyed several holidays on the Isle of Man and it feels like stepping back 50 years. The horse trams and electric tramway reinforce this feeling. You do feel safe there. I was struck by the number of wild flowers as fewer hericides and fertilizers are used.
