Kelso a small town in Roxburghshire in the Scotish borders, is built along the banks of the River Tweed and River Teviot.

We visited Kelso in October, the autumn colours along the tree lined roads were just superb.

Kelso Abbey dating back to 1128 is worth a visit as is the magnificent Floors Castle.

The town centre is a mixture of georgian and victorian architecture and Kelso boasts the largest town market square in Scotland.

A variety of traditional and modern shops provide the Kelso shopping experience. Local hotels restaurants provide places to stop and have a break.

We took a walk along the River Tweed and watched some Salmon Fisherman. . I particularly like this river walk because it is flat and there is a well maintained pavement. Seats are provided at very regular intervals on the grass. This is important to me as I have limited mobility and walk with a stick. The good pavement would be suitable for wheelchair users. There is a car park beside the river walk, so those with mobility problems do not have far to go to reach the seating beside the river. The river walk is treelined, with some seating near trees to provide shade when needed, not that it was needed in October!

Very close to the River Tweed is Mayfield Garden Centre which has a cafe where we stopped for lunch, I would describe the food as mediocre. The garden centre itself is rather nice, it has a huge area selling craft equipment, as well as the usual garden centre merchandise.

Kelso has a variety of hotels and guest houses to stay. As well as being a lovely place to visit it is ideally situated for exploring the Scottish Borders with good road links South towards Newcastle Upon Tyne, North to Edinburgh – Edinburgh is about 40 miles away. The east coast and Berwick Upon Tweed is about 25 miles east.

ESW it is a lovely walk. If you head for Mayfield Garden Centre, Kelso, the river walk is just beside it. Turn right and you can walk along the river, the short distance to Kelso Abbey, or turn left and there is a longer walk. There are plenty of seats along the river bank, and a flat surface path. There is a nice café in the Garden Centre.
