It was a hot steamy morning as we embarked on our journey from the sleepy town of Kalutara to the bustle of Kandy, where a refreshing cup of tea awaited us. The lengthy drive was the best introduction to the beautiful island of Sri Lanka. Once we had left behind the dust and squalor of Colombo and climbed higher into the verdant hills, we passed through neat little villages, taking in the view of the tea plantations and paddy fields. Here the local women, bent double, worked across the lush ground in perfectly straight alliance harvesting their crops. Kandy boasts the magnificent Temple of the Tooth overlooking a huge lake in the centre of the town. Actually the Temple looked somewhat sad, propped up by scaffolding after bomb damage by a Tamil explosion. Now locals and tourists flock there to marvel at the magnificent gold statues. Outside the temple, row on row of sandals sit awaiting their owners to reclaim them …like a backlog at a shoe repairers. This was my maiden voyage to the Indian Ocean, to absorb the memories of beautiful sunsets, palm-fringed beaches, and to meet the incredibly gentle friendly people. I hope it will not be my last.
