We travelled by train to visit Harrogate, London to York in 2 hours then just half an hour onto Harrogate. It is a historical spa town fashionable from the mid 19th century as visitors flocked to the town to "take the waters". We sampled the spa water which is very sulpheric and smells of rotten eggs! We visitd the Royal Pump Room Museum. The hotel was in walking distance of the town and the town itself was compact enough for you to walk and see everything. The Valley Gardens are beautiful and there is a walk you can do which takes you through the Valley Gardens up to the RHS Gardens Harlow Carr. Just below the shopping area is The Stray – another beautiful gardened area. Harrogate is popular for it's International Conference Centre and is well served with hotels and restaurants. We were overwhelmed by the portion sizes served. We did not have time to visit the Turkish Baths (housed in the historic Royal Baths building) but will certainly put it on our agenda for our return visit. We cannot recommend Harrogate highly enough.

I agree with most of this review but feel I must comment on the trains from York to Harrogate. This line, which terminates in Leeds is operated by an elderly fleet of Pacer and Sprinter trains. These are noisy, uncomfortable and stink of diesel. Plans to replace these cattle trucks in 2016 have been abandoned. So "Enchanting Harrogate" is severely let down by a clapped out rail service.
