We enjoyed a relaxing break at the character Chainbridge Hotel which has a wonderful location with the River Dee meandering in front of it and the Llangollen Canal (Shropshire Union) behind the building. A great area for walkers – just 10 minutes to the beautiful Horseshoe Falls, built by Thomas Telford and opened in 1805, and a two mile walk along the canal to Llangollen town. The scenery is wonderful and horse drawn pleasure boats pass on a regular basis .Llangollen is a delightful town with good shopping and some excellent restaurants and cafes. The Llangollen steam railway commences its journey here, terminating at Carrog, although work is in progress to extend the line to Corwen.

We caught this grand old train as far as Berwyn, directly opposite the Chainbridge Hotel. Berwyn Station Master's House, Grade 11 Listed,is situated on a ledge above the gorge of the River Dee,and has now been refurbished as a holiday home. We walked across the viaduct, where the old chainbridge spans the river, not presently in use but repairs are scheduled. Looks most attractice when illuminated in the evening. We again enjoyed a delicious evening meal with locally sourced food and good company at the hotel.

This was a nostalgic trip to an unspoilt beautiful part of Wales. Would recommend highly.

On our way to Ruthin last summer, we called in at the Chainbridge Hotel and the new owners had refurbished the ground floor area. It was a great improvement and we were surprised at the work accomplished. Unfortunately we couldn't have our lunch as they were catering for a wedding party but we stopped off at the recommended Britannia Inn, close to the Horseshoe Falls, and enjoyed a delicious meal there. Such a beautiful part of North Wales.

This review has made me stop and think. Over the years we have had many holidays in Wales, but have never stopped in Berwyn. There's a lot more to do than I realised. Another advantage is that it off the usual tourist beat too.
