As we live in Norwich and have a love of paintings, especially Vermeer (shared with good friends) we planned a 4-night stay in Delft in June. The short flight from Norwich airport was followed by a train journey to Delft. Delightful, helpful people who speak very good English made it an easy trip. We were there in time for breakfast! We had pre-booked a lovely hotel (tripadvisor recommended as we didn't know about SilverTravel then) called Hotel Leuwenbrug – a small, family-run home-from-home hotel overlooking the canal and 5 minutes from the station and main market. It's a bit chaotic at the moment as they're rebuilding the station and surrounding area. Once safely in our hotel (coffee on arrival and helpful info, maps etc) we could walk everywhere in the town – including the Delft Factory – and found plenty to do in our 4-night stay. The tourist information office staff were exceptionally helpful and patient, explaining how the different passes you can buy would keep down the cost. Hired cycles at 5 Euros per day (returnable deposit on top) from Halfords meant we could spend a day exploring the countryside on safe tracks mostly along canals: Schipluiden and its bakery highly recommended. A restaurant we can't recommend highly enough is the Spijshuis de Dis, Beestenmarkt 36. The owner, Jan gives personal service and we ate wonderfully well. He knows how customers want to be treated and not only offers a truly unique dining experience but sculpts and runs in his spare time. The Vermeer Centre is also unique – included in the price of one of the tourist office packages is the most delicious coffee and cake as well as an insight into this great artist. If you want to see original works by him, they aren't in Delft but a short train-ride away in Den Haag. But you can savour a truly delightful atmosphere, antique markets to die for and a pace of life rarely experienced now. Just watch out for the bikes!
