We flew into the new Hong Kong airport and the journey began with the most helpful people at the airport who were wonderful in looking after us, as were on our way to Bali. Two hours later we were on our way. We stayed in Bali for 7 days and had a great time. We came back to Hong Kong and stayed on the Hong Kong island for the three nights in a city hotel which was small but beautiful. We explored most of the island and all its shops and markets and tried all the wonderful real Chinese food in local eating areas. We moved across to Kowloon side into the Royal Plaza hotel for the next 8 days. We re-lived our three years in Hong Kong (1986-1989) in the 8 days. It was more amazing than we were expecting. The young Hong Kong people were wonderful and very glad to assist us in all kinds of things. We explored the real Hong Kong as the locals would and we had the most wonderful time. Our little knowledge of Cantonese helped. What a thriving and beautiful city it is. From 6AM to midnight we wondered and looked at all the amazing sites and enjoyed the most beautiful food. Lots of shopping and site seeing. The new buildings and shopping malls are just amazing and they rival Dubai and such places. We moved over to Lantau Island for the last three nights for rest and relaxation. We visited Tai-O fishing village where I worked (1986-1989). It has changed out of existence but still retains its charm. The Polin monastery with the giant Buddha was amazing – the vegetarian food was great. We had some beautiful relaxing time on the edge of the sea with some lovely food at the local restaurants. We enjoyed it so much that we are thinking of having a holiday home on Lantau in the future. It is only 20 minutes boat ride to the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. We both agreed that Hong Kong has changed for the better since it was handed over to the Chinese. I mostly give credit to the beautiful people of Hong Kong – who are hard working and love life at the full pace. Having lived there as part of the Royal Navy it was a pleasure to see the place had improved so much. One word of warning keep away from the typically tourist areas and explore the real Hong Kong. You will really enjoy the city and the people and mostly the amazing food. Traveling around is very easy and very organised with lots of advice from the Hong Kong tourist board – The girls are amazingly friendly and very knowledgeable indeed. In fact they deserve a especial mention as they helped us on many occasions and could not do enough. Overall it was just beautiful experience. Thank you to all the people of Hong Kong.
