We arrived in Venice by train having travelled from the UK via Eurostar and stopping in Lausanne en route. Exiting from the Station you are immediately immersed in the frenetic activity on the Grand Canal. Buying a pass for the Vaporetto allows you to hop on and off at will. We had a self-catering apartment not far from Ca d'oro stop. The apartment had a small balcony (which I would recommend for those sunny breakfasts) and spacious accommodation on the 2nd floor. Lovely views over a side canal, although this can be noisy in the mornings when the boats pull up to unload their wares for the local shops. Buying wine was a delight from the small shop round the corner where you take a bottle and have it filled from the casks – and so cheap! There was a local supermarket, bread shop and fruit & veg stall all within yards – how lovely not to have to take the car to stock up. Best of all was the trip to the Rialto market, a short walk brought us to the Traghetto stop (a locals gondola crossing the canal) and for half a euro we could ride to the other side and straight into the market with its wonderful selection of fish and fresh produce. St Marks Square is much better at night than during the day, when the day trippers have gone home. Yes its expensive to sit and have a drink but such a lovely experience to listen to the various musicians play, and even the chance of a dance in the square if you wish! Staying locally means you can get into the popular attractions early and avoid the long queues at the Doge's Palace and the Basilica. A trip to Murano is fun and for a different experience try the Lido where there is a lovely beach and a totally different atmosphere of a seaside resort yet only a vaporetto stop away. The inevitable gondola ride is somethign you should do just once – expensive but who can come to Venice and not do so. However, give Harry's Bar a miss – very expensive and a poor experience. We would visit Venice again and again – a wonderful city to explore and enjoy.
