We visited this Greek island for the first time in May. We stayed in Perivolos near the beach and were pleasantly surprised as we expected steep hills, crowds and masses of people.. In May the resort was quite, but easily accessible to all the island's attractions and for such a steep hilly island very flat, and we enjoyed walking along the beach and eating out at the tavernas on the beach. The local bus was quite easy and a 15 minute ride to Fira and quite the most breathing bus ride along the coast and stopping at local pretty villages in the hills. The town of Fira itself is a jewel in the Aegean Sea, Perched high on the sheer cliff overlokking the beautiful caldera. Many people only spend half a day in Santorini stopping off on a cruise but really this is not enough time to savour the delights of the island. If you love good food, breathtaking views, ancient ruins, quiet walks along the beach, magnificent sunsets this is the island. My abiding memory is of the white white buildings, blue domed churches, and the magnificent volcanic islands set in the sparkling sea. I just can't wait to return.

What part of Santorini is the best to get the classic photograph that you see in all the holiday brochures? Is it Oia? Your trip there sounds wonderful. I would like to go there next year on holiday but am not sure which part is best.

Fira is interesting for a few hours, but Oia is more beautiful at one end of Santorini, and Akrotiri has a fantastic "dig" at the other end of the island,
